PROFESSIONAL LEGAL BACKGROUND: Deputy County Counsel, Los Angeles County Counsel, 1958-1959; Senior and Managing Partner, Rutan & Tucker, Santa Ana, California, Orange Countys largest law firm (city prosecutor for the cities of Cypress and Dairyland), 1960-1978; prior to 1985, senior partner, Dickenson, Peatman & Fogherty, Napa, California (law practice involved a broad range of complex civil litigation).
JUDICIAL BACKGROUND: Associate Justice, Divison Three, April 1996; Presiding Judge, Napa County Superior Court (1987-1988, 1990-1991); presiding criminal, civil, family law, and juvenile court judge (1985-1996); Presiding Judge, appellate department of the superior court (1986-1987, 1990-1993); authored the Napa County Rules for Administration of Civil Litigation (delay reduction); reelected to the superior court in 1986 and in 1992.

EDUCATIONAL/PROFESSIONAL HONORS AND AWARDS: Napa Superior Court, the Napa Courts received the 1990 challenge reward from the County Supervisors Association of California (CSCA) for automation and delay reduction programs; Judicial Councils Ralph N. Kleps award for comprehensive court reorganization/consolidation recognizing the Napa courts, state coordinating both its judicial and administrative services.
PROFESSIONAL TEACHING/EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES: Penalist for CJER, participating in civil procedure, probate, delay reduction, and court coordination institutes.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: Chairperson, Napa County Child Abuse Council (1989-1991), implemented procedures to protect victims of sexual abuse; a member of the Napa County Criminal Justice Planning Commission; liaison to the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Commission (as presiding juvenile court judge); President of the Napa Valley Stanford Alumni Club and speaker at numerous seminars and public meetings regarding juvenile dependency and delinquency matters.
